Incredible views the whole way. The further and higher you go, the better the views are. It's 1.2 miles to Heart Lake, 1.5 to Castle Lake View Point. The trail is a little rocky in places, but well-traveled and easy to follow. While boots and poles aren't necessary, flip-flops and Crocs are not a good idea. There is some mild elevation gain to Heart Lake, but nothing major (500'-600'). The path from there to Castle Lake View Point is a little steeper, but worth the view if you make it. At that point, you'll be able to look down on Castle Lake from 750' over it. There was also a fairly large snow field still intact, left of the trail, just past Heart Lake the last Saturday in June. I got there fairly early in the morning, so the trail wasn't too busy yet, but that changed on my way down. If you can, I'd recommend walking this trail on a weekday during fall when there are likely to be a lot fewer people. For the number of incredible, constantly changing views (like the clouds covering the top of Shasta), in such a short distance, this trail is hard to beat, even when it's busy.

Amazing viewpoint of the lake and Mt Shasta.

From the car park head left around the lake to start the trail. Takes about 50 minutes hike up to the viewpoint passing by Heart Lake. Easy trek but constant uphill (kids were doing it). 40 minutes back down. Had an hour at the top with lunch by the lake. Saw a deer!

There’s no trail signing. After about 30 mins we lost the trail.

Plenty of space in car park at 09:30 when I arrived and still a few spaces at 12:30. Came on a Wednesday though. Enough for about 40 cars though.

05/27/24. Memorial Day. 4:30 PM.

Parking is free. Heart lake tail is not accessible but some managed to make it despite the thick snow on the mountain top.

If you plan to go heart lake, take trail pic or download it in your app. No signal on the top. We gave up as we cannot navigate which direction. Tail is all covered underneath thick ice. The guy who been there comment it worth the hike because heart lake is half frozen.

Water is too cold to swim in castle lake. Water is like Lake Tahoe water. Ice cold. Can barely dip into for more than 10 seconds. I see other Paddle boarding and kayaking which is amazing.

Only a couple panic table and water access near parking lot. No any shore available to access due to water level rise.

Came for the hike and to take the iconic heart lake photo, but didn’t make it past the shoreline. The trail is blocked by high waters in the creek and snow covers the trail. Since the trail wasn’t marked and we didn’t bring proper snow gear, we didn’t hang out long. Gorgeous lake though!

I did the hike to Heart Lake. The trail is not well marked at all although there seems to be multiple trails leading to it. I used Google maps to approximate my position and which direction to go in coupled with a screenshot of the trail from AllTrails.

Мы смогли с двумя детьми 5 и 7 лет! Но день был дождливый и поэтому не было жарко, я думаю это было решающим фактором в нашем успехе.
