The tryouts were chaotic. Instead of providing several days where they could receive a number of girls per day that they could handle, they made more than 200 girls come at once when they didn’t have the infrastructure nor the proper amount of trainers to offer a reasonable evaluation. Girls crying, unnecessary stress and lack of care is what distinguished this experience. They only care about taking your money as fast as they can.

AVOID SADDLEBACK VOLLEYBALL at ALL costs! The club director KiYi cares only about taking your money. This club does not want to win at any of the tournaments they sign up for. Check their publicly available win-loss records for yourselves. Mike Bonner which has his own negative reviews in this post, manages day-to-day club activities, his mandate is to keep the club running so you don’t get a refund. The setup is similar to other clubs in the area, coaches, uniforms, regular gym playtime; but no one cares about your daughter. In these transition years as a teenager, no one cares. Player development in persona, individual confidence level or athletic ability is non-existent. There is no accountability and this is the leadership style and culture both KiYi & Mike exemplify. Both do NOT listen to the Team Parents (who are the ones funding your club activities). They hide behind the long standing of the club (which has gone down hill since their heydays back 10 years ago). Not a club for competition like TStreet or Wave VBC. This is more like after school social club for developing girls. If you are paying your hard earned money in this tough economy, skip this club. Your money is better spent elsewhere. Don’t fall for the bait-and-switch from their Tryout extravaganza. Club season and tournaments are just a heartache for paying parents. Regarding coaches, and culture. Every club has good and bad coaches. Unfortunately, bcos of poor management and leadership from KiYi, they can’t retain good coaches. No accountability; just focused on taking your money.

My daughter started at Saddleback in their VolleyHigh (rec) program last year when she was thirteen. She had burnt out on club soccer and was looking for a new sport to try. Our experience could not have been better! This was not your average rec league. We were fortunate enough to have coach Lisa and my daughter absolutely loved it! Lisa is Amazing! She’s a long time club coach at Saddleback and she coached our team just as she would any of her competitive teams. It was astounding to see such improvement for all the players so quickly. She fostered my daughter’s love for volleyball and in six month’s had prepared her to make her HS team, as one of the only players that had not previously played on a competitive club team. My daughter is now playing on one of Lisa’s club teams and our experience continues to be positive. Lisa’s approach is fair and compassionate. She truly cares about her players and gives everyone equal opportunity to grow and improve their skills. I have recommended Saddleback to several friends who have had similar experiences.

My daughter has played for Saddleback for 3 years now and couldn’t be happier. Her coaches have been amazing role models for her on and off the court. The owners, coaches and families are so welcoming it truly feels like a family environment every time you walk in.

I’m submitting this review to relate my daughter’s negative experiences and the antagonistic reception we received as parents when we expressed our concerns to the club director. Our daughter is twelve years old and was excited to join Saddleback under Mike Bonner, whose reputation was considered positive. At first, we thought everyyhing was going well and the coach seemed to act in a satisfactory manner, but after a couple of months, our daughter began to return from practice withdrawn, upset and crying. She wouldn’t tell us, at first, what was going on, only that she perceived the coach "hated” her. While we understand that it’s not uncommon for kids to make mistakes and have a bad practice occasionally, her experiences seem to occur with increasing frequency. It wasn’t until her friends reported to their parents what was happening that we learned the truth. After we complained about the coach’s attitude and demeanor towards some kids, he seemed to retaliate against our daughter.
The coach engaged in consistent and targeted verbal and emotional abuse aimed at our child. We’re not overstating the situation; other children took notice of his demeanor. They reported that he ignored our daughter when she arrived at practice—while simultaneously greeting a friend standing beside her. He singled her out far more than others, diminishing her constantly during practice and at tournaments, not simply with words but with visible disdain, shaking his head in frustration and sighing loudly. Other parents witnessed and confirmed his poor actions. His behavior was unacceptable to a minor, and it diminished our child emotionally in a manner that serves no productive training or motivational purpose.
Other children took notice of this bullying behavior and quietly told our daughter on a few occasions that they were sorry for what she was experiencing. Though Saddleback’s website indicates that this particular club director was part of anti-bullying campaigns, his attitude toward our daughter suggests that his actions contradict this reputation. Berating a child publicly and repeatedly, especially during tournaments, is unacceptable. We understand the nature of coaching; however, this behavior was far beyond the norm. As a father, I often wonder how a coach who hand-picked our daughter to play for his team can act so childish. Finally, we had no choice but to remove her completely from the team before he could do more damage to her self-esteem.
Though all coaches are Safe Sport certified, this coach, in our opinion, repeatedly ignored both Safe Sport and USA Volleyball bylaws against verbal assault, bullying, and related behavior. To anyone considering enrolling their child at Saddleback, due diligence is essential. Our experience with the club and our daughter’s coach was negative, damaging, and deeply disappointing. Yet, we were ignored when we expressed our concern to the club owner as the bottom line seemed to be his only concern.
We can only report what happened to our daughter and what her friends and parents witnessed. PLEASE BE CAREFUL.

Brand new to the club. So far, not a bad thing to say about it. Really looking forward to a great season. Love they are taking COVID serious and taking all precautions. They even wipe down the courts and all the balls after each practice

The LBVBC of Rancho Santa Margarita is easy to get to off of the 241 toll road. On-street parking is a huge bonus as most other OC tournament locations only have paid parking. Staff are nice and check in goes fast. Inside is very cramped. Many courts do not have benches for players to sit on. There are even fewer benches for parents or family, so make sure to bring a folding chair and jostle for the small amount of courtside space available. The ceiling is very low, and trusses cause continual interference with play. Nets leave huge gaps between courts and balls are continually entering adjacent courts. Men's restroom is pretty beat up by the end of the tournament, and I imagine the women's is as well.
